At the precipice of danger and a stone’s throw from safety.

Refreshing the fantasy genre- reimagining our own world colliding with brand new horizons.

So what is Outbound?

My original sword & sorcery adventure franchise; a rather untraditional take that blends traditional western and high fantasy with a touch of cosmic horror. What if humanity reached for the stars with reckless abandon- their skyscrapers piercing straight through the firmament and burrowing into hell, unleashing the horrors found there?

Dense concrete jungles parade past the cloud coverage. Miles and miles of glass, lime, and rebar ascending to new fevered heights. Here, ego parks blend straight into stratosphere. Who’s to say where the penthouses end and heavens begin?

It may be hard to believe, but according to ancient texts, the world was once electrified and gleaming. A shining jewel where society’s every need was met swifter the snap of one’s fingers. But humans are fickle creatures, and their judgments easily clouded, ensuring a gilded age stood no chance at lasting. This metropolis seethed with corruption, seizing under the weight of selfish vanity. Its folk became thoughtless and abhorrent, eventually slated by elder gods for sulphur and trials by fire. However the ill-fated inferno never arrived, and in its wake emerged the never-ending chill.

The days grew long and the earth slowly ground to a halt. This is not merely a deadened daze, but the dawn of new ice age which froze the very heart of old city, wiping the board clean. Yet immortals and cosmic icons could never quite extinguish mankind’s penchant to prevail over misfortune- and well, each other. People took to the sewer and subway systems, clinging to the countless underground corridors, pleading to the early clans for respite from the rend. These generations passed the torch to true pioneers, those whom embody the frontier grit and spit in the face of danger, because this is no longer a realm which historians have come to love. These northern territories writhe with raging megafauna. The conditions have reshaped flesh, coaxing matters of the tooth and fang, ensuring that the lowliest lemming could rival monsters. Nana Nature unveils her worst creations yet, drowning settlers who dare tread against the tide.

This is their final frontier: a world ripe for the taking where anyone can reinvent themselves, battling the elements, or at least die trying. Human hands chip at the ice or shovel packsnow, revealing empires eternal, and wealth entombed beneath. Although they prefer the term “amateur archaeologist” over “looter.”

Even the apocalypse couldn’t spur mankind to change. Each denizen doubles-down, ushering pursuits of ultimate freedom, and showcasing the deepest flaws of their own character. This a world where survivors not only revel in the seven deadly sins, but aspire to become them. Take sloth for example. The relapses start small- think carnival rides and amusement parks, something to derive joy from, and a constant satisfaction for being benign, content and lazy. Then the case advances into something else entirely: freedom from responsibility, ignoring others, and at worst, their own bodily functions. At its peak, specimens under the influence of sloth possess such a gravity that they’re treated as a natural obstacle. Those that drink deeply are gifted exactly what they deserve, devolving into cruel monsters, and forging personalities as broken as the world they find themselves in.

Visit a realm unlike any other, as gila wilderness bleeds into the firmament, pioneers are left with lingering nightmares, often concocting far-fetched tales of giant hands dashing down, and the sovereigns of kingdom come inching the nearest pawn to slaughter.

A Little Bit About Me

I’m a central Ohio native who has always been immersed in storytelling, studying art, design and all things creative. I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Animation from the Columbus College of Art & Design.

Published Work

In my stories, characters must regularly confront the supernatural, fighting to become more than simply pawns between the games of cosmic eldritch horrors. Magik often draws the ire of ruinous powers, and in a world where isolated frontier towns are crushed by relentless torrents of snowfall, vagabonds take all the help they can get, lest be wiped off the map. The events in my novel start similarly to the Klondike Gold Rush, as pioneers attempt to tame the unrelenting wilderness. Those at the mercy of the weather quickly discover fate pulling their strings, and beasts nipping at their heels, goading them further into the fray. In a world so untamed, everything may seem bleak and dismal, but there is still much joy in the world, hidden to all those too bitter or driven to drink. Whether we find love in our hobbies and craft, or each other, there is always balance, our light to guide way through the dark.

Epic Fantasy Novels

It all starts with Those Wyrd and Wonderful, the first in a planned six-book saga.

6x9, 540-pages of an epic journey and discovery

Dark fantasy. Cosmic horror. Sword and sorcery.

  • A Journey of self-discovery, and how the ordinary becomes extraordinary.

  • Life-like characters, exploring all their strengths and weaknesses, fleshing-out mental illness, testing the boundaries between the human body and spirit.

  • No black or white decisions. The line between good and evil is morally ambiguous.

  • People suffer abuse if they fathom becoming the oppressors.

  • Creations emulation their creators. If people are immoral and corrupt, so must the gods.

  • Romanticizing the human element, triumphing over beings with unlimited power, and those that cavort with them.

Synopsis

After the earth froze over in a great cataclysm, humanity took to the old city’s underground tunnels and survived the chill like soot-laden vermin. Hundreds of years later, as the clans continue to clash over heat and scraps, a mass exodus of people decide to test their mettle by reclaiming the world above only to discover that these lands rally against them by manner of tooth and claw.

My coming-of-age story thrusts William into the limelight, one of those second-generation pioneer kids who’d rather forfeit his daily drudges than compete against those vagabonds racing to stake their claim. Alas, as the barrowtide season bears the brunt of bad weather, William’s frontier settlement is deemed just another lost cause. The young boy Jones is forced into a harsh reality, coming to terms on whether he’ll sink or swim, cast against an ever-rising white tide and the dark secrets harbored there.

Dealt a bad hand, William faces a hostile world where threats are always looming against him. “Those Wyrd and Wonderful” showcases the grim decisions of frontier life, because to thrive, one must first survive. This earnest lad learns to roll with the punches, neither losing his compassion, nor those morals while countless others around him have chosen to forget.

Worldbuilding Book

The essential encyclopedia and creature compendium, detailing just what it takes to survive in this fictional winter wonderland. What sort of menagerie should those intrepid navigators expect?

Synopsis

Forget heroes and monsters. The cold shall set you free!

The worst part about armageddon is that it arrived without a sound, a creeping frost that preserved the pale earth with generous bounties of permafrost and rime. Those upended by the great cataclysm fled amid the Underdark, or the miles upon miles of railways, service tunnels and sewers laid below, spending centuries vying for warmth, bickering amongst themselves while the realms above catalyze ice age megafauna. Magik blatantly seeps into this realm, the result of meddling dark gods, warping brain, brawn, brine and boulders to fuel their infernal schemes against one another.

While trailblazing pioneers brace the elements, frigid temperatures and relentless winds alike, reclaiming those wild hinterland territories and frontier hamlets, they’re reminded about humanity’s fragile place amongst this new food chain. Ordinary life ranges from the dull and dreary daily drudgeries: rearing bison for burdens, droving caribou herds, or excavating packsnow to uncover artifacts of yore, ranging to extreme existential crises, and the pure, unadulterated cosmic horror that comprises the raging feuds between celestials. Immortals take their battle from the firmament to these fringe territories, invading the ruins of old Urbana from every edge of the known world. Their conflicts reverse the natural order, bleeding auroras dry and bearing forth tempest squalls, certainly driving the sanest minds mad.
